The numbers are in and it's official: the 2017 Super Duty is the best truck out there for towing, and just about everything else.

A few months ago we compared the Silverado HD, Ram 3500 and Ford Super Duty. Back then, the 3500 had the best towing numbers.

But Ford takes a commanding lead with the launch of their new Super Duty trucks. Stay tuned for everything you need to know about the frame, 360 degree cameras, engine and towing capabilities.

Where do we even begin with the trucks that Ford's marketing manager called "The Best Heavy-Duty truck we've ever made"

Well, let's start with the frame.

 

The fully boxed, 95% steel frame is up to 24 times stiffer than previous models. They proved its strength when they used 8 F-150s and an F-750, totalling nearly 60,000 pounds, to hang from the new frame.

 

Through-welded, closed section crossmembers aid in making this the best truck for fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing, but we'll get to that in a minute.

 

The body, just like the F-150, is made from aluminum, saving 350 pounds and they used that weight savings to beef up the powertrain.

 

Inside the cab is where you start to understand just how high tech these trucks are.

 

There's cameras *all over* this thing! There's six on the truck itself, and then one that you can put on a trailer so you literally have eyes in the back of your head.

 

Ford's trailer reverse guidance feature provides a view down both sides of the truck as well as trailer angle. These driver aids make backing up a trailer so easy a grandmother from the city could do it.

 

There's even this crazy feature that looks at the truck from the top down and shows you a 360* view around the truck. This is super hard to explain, so let's just show you what we mean.

 

The system always starts with the 360 view. You activate it with the camera button. It uses the front camera, two side view cameras in the mirror and the rear camera. The images are stitched together. That gives you the 360 degree view. This allows you to see what's on the ground around your truck!

 

I think we're getting into science fiction shit here.

 

But while tech is cool, what really matters is the engine. Coming standard is a 6.2 Liter V8 gas engine with 430lb-ft of torque and 385 horsepower.

 

The top of the line engine is a 6.7 liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel. This is the engine that sets Super Duties apart from every other truck out there. The Power Stroke has 440 horsepower and a staggering 925 lb-ft of torque. Topping the 900 lb-ft of torque made by the Ram 3500.

 

Max payload is  another strong point for the Super Duty. The F-350 has a maximum payload of about 7,500 pounds.

And it doesn't stop there. This truck is a towing beast. The F-450 Super Duty SuperCrew 4x4 features a max gooseneck tow rating of… are you ready for it?

 

32,500 pounds.

 

I mean that's like having a semi truck that you can park in your driveway

Pull your boat with

Piss off your neighbors with.
Pretty cool.

That's nearly 1,300 pounds more than the Ram 3500.

 

Fifth wheel towing max is 27,500 pounds, and conventional towing is increased to 21,000 pounds.

 

While these numbers are for the F-450, the F-250 is no slouch with a conventional towing maximum of 18,000 pounds.
