45-plus mpg without looking weird: The 2019 Honda Insight is the normal person’s hybrid

The Insight powertrain delivers smooth, reasonably brisk acceleration. It has no trouble getting up to speed on the interstate or passing someone sauntering on a two-lane. Without a torque converter and the rest, engagement feels direct and I suppose that’s because it is. Low rpm torque from the electric motor makes for a wonderful companion in the car. And, despite my aggressive driving, my fuel economy stayed well above 40 mpg.
