With the World Health Organization declaring the coronavirus COVID-19 as a pandemic, many governments around the world have been taking steps to protect their people with regulations to stop travel and to ban large events. Things are moving very quickly and there is little that F1 can do to stop an inevitable wave of postponements and cancellations.

The NTT IndyCar Series will stay the course and open its 2020 season with this weekend's Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. However, due to the moving target that is the COVID-19 pandemic, it will happen in a private setting without fans in attendance. The event will continue to be televised for both national and international audiences.

The McLaren Formula 1 team has 15 team members, including one confirmed case, in quarantine in Melbourne, Australia, as a result of the coronavirus outbreak that led to cancellation of the F1 Australian Grand Prix.

Split Vote Led to F1 Australian Grand Prix Cancellation

A joint statement on Friday morning in Melbourne from the FIA, Formula 1 and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation confirmed the rumors overnight that the race will not go ahead after a member of the McLaren Racing Team tested positive for COVID-19 and the team's then decision to withdraw from the Australian Grand Prix.
