Hyundai unveiled its Ioniq 5 this week, which will join other upcoming models under its standalone EV banner—mirroring the approach of automakers like Volvo that have likewise spun off dedicated EV sub-brands. Based on Hyundai and Kia's Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the design of the Ioniq 5 is officially a nod to the Giugiaro-penned Hyundai Pony of 1974. "The Ioniq sub-brand is Hyundai's 'hip' ingredient for persuading curious customers towards an electric future," said Robby DeGraff, industry analyst at AutoPacific. "Sure, the recently refreshed Kona Electric is still a great offering with generous amount of range per charge (258 miles give or take), but this new Ioniq 5 we saw debut a few days ago absolutely has that 'Gotta have it' factor that's critical when it comes to pulling shoppers away from ICEs."  The Ioniq 5 is built on Hyundai Motor Group's BEV architecture called E-GMP. Buyers will get a choice of 58- and 72.6-kWh battery packs, and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. EPA figures will be available close to the model's market debut this fall, as will pricing. By the time it goes on sale, it will face competition from new Nissan and Volkswagen electric crossovers. But it won't be the sole Ioniq model on sale for long; the Ioniq 6 sedan will land in 2022 and will be followed by the Ioniq 7 SUV in 2024, with Hyundai planning a whole range of EVs.  The next USPS truck could be retrofitted with EV power. The United States Postal Service made its own EV news this week with an even longer-awaited vehicle—longer by a couple of decades. Oshkosh Defense, who won the contract to build the new trucks, says the delivery vehicle is designed to be converted to electric power at a future date, but has not outlined how that will happen—or when.    Porsche has yet to release full details of the 2021 Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, but we did get a brief stint in a European-spec prototype, which was in California for photography ahead of its on-sale date this summer.  This April, Lordstown Motors is taking its Endurance EV pickup to one of the most brutal proving grounds imaginable for a truck, the SCORE San Felipe 250 off-road race—and stresses that this trek to the Baja Peninsula is not just a publicity stunt.
