Ford Raises Lightning Price and Restarts Orders

Ford reopens the order books for its Lightning pickup—and bumps the price.

Despite all the hype about the Tesla Cybertruck, it was Ford that delivered an affordable, everyday electric pickup truck first, promising a starting price below $40,000. The F-150 Lightning immediately attracted plenty of attention and plenty of orders, offering a no-nonsense exterior along with a very handy frunk. So much attention, in fact, that back in April of this year Ford had to close the order books due to too much demand.

The good news is Ford has reopened the order books this week.

The bad news is that the truck is now... quite a bit more expensive than it was before.

The culprits, of course, are the rising cost of components, with Ford CEO Jim Farley citing battery costs as the main driver of the price hikes.

The price hikes for the top trims might not affect buyer demand all that much, but what about the base Pro version and other lower-trim levels?

The truck may have been much more of a financial stretch for those buyers who could only afford a modestly spec'd truck, than for those who've had their eye on the Platinum Extended Range version.

Porsche Taycan Breaks Production EV Nürburgring Record

The Tesla Model S has been one of just a handful of EVs polishing the Nürburgring this past decade, and it's easy to see why. For a significant part of the past 10 years, spicier versions of the Model S have been the most powerful mass-market electric vehicles by a wide margin. So there wasn't much need for Tesla to scramble to prove itself at the 'Ring every year—there was simply no competition in sight. Until 2019.

That's when Porsche recorded a lap time of 7:42.34 in the Taycan Turbo through the Green Hell. Quick for a four-door EV with its curb weight, but about a full minute slower than various production supercars of the day.

Tesla fired back when a Model S Plaid posted a time of 7:35.579 in September of 2021.

Now Porsche has regained the title of the fastest lap in the category of four-door production EVs... but not by a wide margin, and only using a new performance kit that's only available in Germany at the moment.
