Will We Ever Get Chinese EVs in the U.S.?

In the past couple of decades we've heard several Chinese automakers voice their ambitions to launch sales in the US, each time claiming the move to be just two to three years away. But despite all these plans, a major brand from the Middle Kingdom has yet to land stateside, not taking into account some low-speed EVs not licensed for the road. The same isn't true for Europe, where several prominent Chinese brands have launched sales operations.
A number of them have opened offices in the US, if not yet sales outfits.
This year's edition of the Shanghai Auto Show fully reflected just how big a player in the EV market China has become, with a vast number of brands displaying their latest concepts and production cars.
Which ones have the best chance of launching stateside under their own brands?

Should These Military Land Rovers Go Electric?

By now there are quite a few companies converting Land Rover Defenders to electric power. So far, these sorts of conversions have been aimed at deep-pocketed private owners.
That's slowly changing. Not too long ago UK-based specialist Electrogenic unveiled an affordable conversion kit for Defenders used in agriculture.
"The drop-in conversion kit has been built down to a price. We have achieved our objective of a pay-back of 4 years or less for average farm use," the company says.
Now, Electrogenic along with defense contractor Babcock International will try to do the same for the British army, undertaking a project to convert four Defenders to EV power. The vehicles will then be tested by the Armored Trials and Development Unit (ATDU) in several scenarios.
Of course, for now the goal isn't to convert every single Defender in the British armed forces to EV power, but there could be some vehicles that could benefit from such a conversion.

This EV Charger Can Make Money for Property Owners

As EV infrastructure in the US expands, one type of EV charger that we're still not seeing in any great number is of the curbside variety, with Europe easily outpacing the US when it comes to easy and convenient charging while parallel parked in a city. It has proven more economical for EV infrastructure builders to focus on medium-sized DC fast-charging stations in suburban locations, leaving many urban areas with few charging options.
One Brooklyn-based startup will explore ways to change this status quo with a curbside charger of its own design, one that could earn property owners who host them $1000 a year or more. And the company behind this charging concepts plans to test a number of charging posts in New York City soon.
