Toyota has been a notable holdout when it comes to EVs, with the picture changing only when the bZ4X landed stateside a short time ago, along with a rare stumble for the Japanese automaker in the form of an early recall.

It's easy to get the impression that Toyota is still less than serious about the turn to electrification.
But the Japanese automaker is actually hard at work on the several new generations of EV batteries and vehicles.
A few days ago Toyota unveiled a detailed timeline for several different types of batteries and electric models that we'll see here in the next few years, including ones that will be powered by solid-state batteries.

When Will Chinese EVs Invade the US?

Chinese automakers are no strangers to US auto shows, having displayed their vehicles stateside with some regularity for over a decade at this point.
But despite the fact that several models produced in China are already sold in the US, we have yet to see a major Chinese automaker sell vehicles here under one of their own domestic brands.
Chinese cars are already on sale in North America—in Mexico to be precise. And Chinese EVs are rapidly putting pressure on European automakers on their home continent, not without controversy over fair competition.
And according to one auto industry expert we spoke to, their arrival stateside could very well mirror the Japanese automakers' rise in the US seen in the 1970s and the 1980s.

The UK Is Already Pushing Back Its 2030 EV Goals

Despite unveiling a plan to phase out sales of new gas- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2030, the UK is now getting cold feet. This week the country's Prime Minister walked back these plans, delaying the target date by five years, citing costs to consumers and stresses on the grid.
Much of the UK's automotive and EV charging industry, having invested billions ahead of the 2030 goal, is upset with this turn of events, claiming that it could hurt the entire cause in the short term.
The situation in the US is far more complex, as there are 50 different jurisdictions, each with their own plan—or no plan at all.

But the UK's example is still instructive in what we could see unfold stateside in the coming years as various regions achieve vastly different rates of EV adoption, and as the infrastructure struggles to cope with the volume.
Will some US states that have adopted California's 2035 plan also get cold feet as the deadline draws closer, and worries over the grid and energy production become more tangible?
